MR CHOW London - circa 1968
Longing for his lost culture, Michael wanted to bring something beautiful of his homeland to the West. He realized that China had been declining culturally for 800 years, but the Beijing Opera and cuisine remained intact. Since it was impractical to bring the Beijing Opera to London, he focused on the food. He opened MR CHOW on Valentine´s Day 1968, with authentic Beijing cuisine and an Italian front staff, emulating the British philosophy of "divide and rule". The Knightsbridge venture was the first designer restaurant and, since then, has led and influenced restaurants everywhere. MR CHOW was an immediate success and established a template for a sequence of MR CHOWS which were to span the globe.
